Unruly Equality: U.S. Anarchism in the Twentieth Century, by Andrew Cornell

The first intellectual and social history of American anarchist thought and activism across the twentieth century

In this highly accessible history of anarchism in the United States, Andrew Cornell reveals an astounding continuity and development across the century. Far from fading away, anarchists dealt with major events such as the rise of Communism, the New Deal, atomic warfare, the black freedom struggle, and a succession of artistic avant-gardes stretching from 1915 to 1975.

Unruly Equality traces U.S. anarchism as it evolved from the creed of poor immigrants militantly opposed to capitalism early in the twentieth century to one that today sees resurgent appeal among middle-class youth and foregrounds political activism around ecology, feminism, and opposition to cultural alienation.

Review
"Points to a growing interest in the study of American anarchist history for readers of political and social history."--Jessica Moran"Library Journal" (02/01/2016)

"Andrew Cornell s"Unruly Equality: U.S. Anarchism in the Twentieth Century "comes as a precious gift. It is a sweeping, enthralling history of anarchism s march really, more of a shuffle across the mid-twentieth century in the United States. Throughout eight chapters and 300 pages of storytelling and analysis all backed by another 70 pages of notes Cornell explicitly attempts to demystify how the classical anarchism of Bakunin and Kropotkin morphed into the contemporary anarchisms we now know from today s class strugglers and insurrectionists, to the anarcho-primitivists, and especially to the more intersectional anti-authoritarian current."--Jeremy Louzao"Institute for Anarchist Studies" (04/25/2016)"

"Cornell s book is a perfect fit for a broad array of social and political leaders and thinkers, from young activists who grew up scrawling anarchy symbols on their lockers, to academics who study the means and motives of social change."--Melissa Wuske"Foreword" (03/01/2016)"

"No matter how one feels about it, the current state of anarchism has represented something of a mystery: What was once a mass movement based mainly in working class immigrant communities is now an archipelago of subcultural scenes inhabited largely by disaffected young people from the white middle class. Andrew Cornell'sUnruly Equality: U.S. Anarchism in the Twentieth Centurysupplies the first convincing account of that transition. . . . Cornell's analysis serves as a much-needed check against the kinds of fairy tales that anarchists too often tell themselves about themselves. With its historical backing and its determined even-handedness, Unruly Equalitysimultaneously delivers a well-researched account of the 'transformation of the economic Left into the cultural Left' and offers an honest and nonsectarian assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of each. . . . Unruly Equality makes a real contribution to the history of American anarchism and may if it is widely read and carefully considered make a contribution to anarchism s future as well."--Kristian Williams"Toward Freedom" (05/03/2016)"

From the Inside Flap
“Filled with unforgettable characters, plain heroism, impressive archival discoveries, and tough-minded judgments, Unruly Equality sharply challenges the view that the twentieth century saw anarchist activism and thought thoroughly eclipsed by the ascendancy of scientific socialism within social movements. Influential within campaigns for empowering immigrant workers, African Americans opposing Jim Crow, peacemakers, and the artistic imagination, the anarchists whose lives Cornell so dramatically recovers tested and reinvented their ideas in struggle.”—David Roediger, author of Seizing Freedom: Slave Emancipation and Liberty for All

“Unruly Equality is history for movement builders. In recovering the captivating story of twentieth-century U.S. anarchism, Cornell provides crucial insights into the development of direct democracy, non-hierarchy, prefiguration, and other concepts animating contemporary global movements. Highly readable and theoretically sharp, this book is a vital tool for world changers and scholars alike.”—Marina A. Sitrin, author of Everyday Revolutions: Horizontalism and Autonomy in Argentina

“Unruly Equality shows that a new version of anarchist politics emerged in the postwar decades that was critical of mainstream culture and intent on challenging authority and transforming everyday life; the radical politics of the ’60s, which at the time seemed to come out of nowhere, had roots in fact in the new anarchism of the previous decades. Cornell’s scholarly—and at the same time lively and engaging—account of radical politics in a little-studied period gives us a deeper understanding of the development of radical politics in the latter half of the twentieth century. This book is crucial reading for anyone interested in that history.”—Barbara Epstein, author of The Minsk Ghetto 1941–1943: Jewish Resistance and Soviet Internationalism

Anarchy in the USA
By R. Jacobs
a comprehensive history of anarchist trends in the 20th century United States. Cornell takes the reader from the anarchists' heyday in the early decades of the century up to the anti-glbal capitalism movement of the 1990s. In between, he discusses the role anarchism played in the avant-garde, Beat and counterculture movements, while also explaining its influence in the antiwar, antiracist and feminist movements....an important and useful work.

Japanese Grammar: The Connecting Point, by Kimihiko Nomura

Japanese Grammar: The Connecting Point is instrumental for anyone learning Japanese who seeks to gain a firm grasp of the most important aspect of the language: verb usage. Learning Japanese may seem to be a daunting task, but Dr. Nomura's book will help readers conjugate verbs into a variety of formats, construct sentences systematically, and hold intelligible conversations in Japanese. He groups all Japanese verbs into clusters, creating a method of how each of those groups conjugate, and then demonstrates how to combine various verb forms with auxiliary expressions to form complex sentences. Not only is this method excellent for beginners, as it creates a solid foundation for learners to increase their language ability and attain fluency at a rapid rate, but also for intermediate and advanced levels, as it will help them solidify their verb usage and use Japanese with greater confidence. Learners will also benefit from Dr. Nomura's method because they will be able to shift the level of formality in any conversational situation according to what is culturally appropriate. Furthermore, when a new verb is uttered by other people, the learner will be able to immediately apply the agglutinative process described in this grammar book and generate sentences with a variety of suffixes in a culturally appropriate manner.

Why no other reviews (at least at the time of writing) ?

Quite possibly because other purchasers feel, probably justifiable, you cannot accurately assess this book anything short of a year or so into some serious use of it, and presently it as not been available for much longer than that. Although the impression given on the back cover is that pretty much anyone could use this book, make no mistake, this is very much an academic textbook which whilst 'learning to speak Japanese' orientated mostly does this through the medium of involved technical explanations using the types if sentence structure diagrams and terminology you might otherwise find in academic linguistics texts by Noam Chomsky and the like( example: vF-2x Formative for Vowel Stem Verb, Group1 , level X - there is a reference list of about 200 or more of similar). I did a night class a few years ago which was representative of the level of education/grammatical knowledge in the demographic wanting to learn Japanese and if this had been the textbook most people would have dropped out at the end of the first session.

I am attempting to learn Japanese for what might be called casual non-vocational reasons..I watch a fair amount of films, anime etc. and bought lots of books, but reality is after a full day in front of a workplace PC I normally find I have not got much mental energy left for reading and only manage a glance at couple of pages of any textbook (never mind this one !)before getting drowsy - if you are someone in a similar position and a relative beginner perhaps best to look elsewhere initially..most people will I think find this an intellectually challenging and mentally demanding read and it's not the kind of book you can casually pick up, open a page at random for a couple of minutes and most times quickly gain at least one new insight (as you can with Kodansha particles books etc )..with this one it's not worth trying unless you are in fairly refreshed state of mind and have a least a dedicated half hour to read meticuously between half to one page of material (which you'll probably need to review several times)

The above sounds negative but the counter to this is that in it own terms this looks like an extremely good and ultimately valuable book to the person who has the inclination and time to do it justice. There are about 200 pages dedicated to very detailed explanations of the main grammatical elements and constructions with much attention to elements that are not self-evident or appear ambiguous to English speakers (don't know if this is in it but the likes of sentences where I still don't know if someone is frightened or frightening to someone else). To stress again this is technical stuff but it looks like the hard facts may be that this is the minimum level of explanation needed to clear away the uncertainty and actually to the point of using the language effectively.

There are also 250 pages of tabular appendices, mostly re. verb conjugation etc.
Somnething of the order of 100 pages of this is devoted to verb construction forms - the author says that his system redresses certain problems in the grammatical explanations used by other key authors (eg. the Kodansha verb book)but I have not been able to assess this. This is good because it includes hundreds of example 'realworld' sentences.

The rest of the appendices are tables showing the sentence construction patterns for individual verbs. My main criticism comes here - it's not that it,s bad, it just looks that organised differently you could have done more with around 150 pages.
The main 'gripe' is that each verb is presented in both Japanese and English sorted section - as far as I can see it's the same info so why not just present one in full and then a reference list for the other way round and use the several dozen pages saved for something else. Also the tables look to have been initally constructed by 'mail merging' from a database into a standard tabular format, and then some post-editting. Hence every entry has explanations like 'Use ga or wa to indicate the one who..o to indicate what is...etc. Since the book makes heavy use of abbreviation codes elsewhere why not do the same here and free up a lot of space.
Also instead of realworld sentence examples this section has entries such as 'X wa Y desu', which both misses an opportunity for the reader to gain vocabulary and also because of this the realworld usage of the verb is sometimes not made clear (eg. a verb with three English uses listed: to become intoxicated, get motion sickness, to become lost in ..you assume it's thought/a daze or the like but there's nothing to clear up that it might not be a strange town, a maze etc.)

Overall; a valuable reference/lookup type book for anyone intending to study Japanese seriously over a number of years. Definitely not a 'prior to my trip next year' starting point.

A Russian Journal (Classic, 20th-Century, Penguin), by John Steinbeck

Steinbeck and Capa’s account of their journey through Cold War Russia is a classic piece of reportage and travel writing.

Just after the Iron Curtain fell on Eastern Europe, Pulitzer Prize-winning author John Steinbeck and acclaimed war photographer Robert Capa ventured into the Soviet Union to report for the New York Herald Tribune. This rare opportunity took the famous travelers not only to Moscow and Stalingrad – now Volgograd – but through the countryside of the Ukraine and the Caucasus. Hailed by the New York Times as "superb" when it first appeared in 1948, A Russian Journal is the distillation of their journey and remains a remarkable memoir and unique historical document.

What they saw and movingly recorded in words and on film was what Steinbeck called "the great other side there … the private life of the Russian people." Unlike other Western reporting about Russia at the time, A Russian Journal is free of ideological obsessions. Rather, Steinbeck and Capa recorded the grim realities of factory workers, government clerks, and peasants, as they emerged from the rubble of World War II—represented here in Capa’s stirring photographs alongside Steinbeck’s masterful prose. Through it all, we are given intimate glimpses of two artists at the height of their powers, answering their need to document human struggle. This edition features an introduction by Steinbeck scholar Susan Shillinglaw.

For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

About the Author
John Steinbeck, born in Salinas, California, in 1902, grew up in a fertile agricultural valley, about twenty-five miles from the Pacific Coast. Both the valley and the coast would serve as settings for some of his best fiction. In 1919 he went to Stanford University, where he intermittently enrolled in literature and writing courses until he left in 1925 without taking a degree. During the next five years he supported himself as a laborer and journalist in New York City, all the time working on his first novel, Cup of Gold (1929).

After marriage and a move to Pacific Grove, he published two California books, The Pastures of Heaven (1932) and To a God Unknown (1933), and worked on short stories later collected in The Long Valley (1938). Popular success and financial security came only with Tortilla Flat (1935), stories about Monterey’s paisanos. A ceaseless experimenter throughout his career, Steinbeck changed courses regularly. Three powerful novels of the late 1930s focused on the California laboring class: In Dubious Battle (1936), Of Mice and Men (1937), and the book considered by many his finest, The Grapes of Wrath (1939). The Grapes of Wrath won both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize in 1939.

Early in the 1940s, Steinbeck became a filmmaker with The Forgotten Village (1941) and a serious student of marine biology with Sea of Cortez (1941). He devoted his services to the war, writing Bombs Away (1942) and the controversial play-novelette The Moon is Down (1942).Cannery Row (1945), The Wayward Bus (1948), another experimental drama, Burning Bright(1950), and The Log from the Sea of Cortez (1951) preceded publication of the monumental East of Eden (1952), an ambitious saga of the Salinas Valley and his own family’s history.

The last decades of his life were spent in New York City and Sag Harbor with his third wife, with whom he traveled widely. Later books include Sweet Thursday (1954), The Short Reign of Pippin IV: A Fabrication (1957), Once There Was a War (1958), The Winter of Our Discontent (1961),Travels with Charley in Search of America (1962), America and Americans (1966), and the posthumously published Journal of a Novel: The East of Eden Letters (1969), Viva Zapata!(1975), The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights (1976), and Working Days: The Journals of The Grapes of Wrath (1989).

A story about both Russia and about two journalists
By Adam Rust
I read this book after returning home from a two week trip in Southwestern Russia. Steinbeck and Capa took their journey in 1948. They travel from Moscow to Volgograd and Rostov before turning back in Georgia. Much of the tension in this book springs from the rapidly cooling relationship between leaders of Russia and the United States at that point in time.
Their aim is not political. They seek to understand the hearts of the Soviet people. One of the amusing elements of this book is their regular conflict with the Soviet censors, who refuse to believe that they do not have political motives. Steinbeck intersperses the commentary on Russia with the nuts and bolts of their daily travels. The method mirrors the approach of his 1940 collaboration in the Gulf of California, "The Log from the Sea of Cortez." Steinbeck likes to write about the universal character of people and this trip to Russia or his previous trip in Mexico both speak to that interest. His conclusion is that Russians are like people anywhere else - they are proud of their homes and their families and are sincere in their efforts to build their nascent country. Steinbeck also goes to pains to elicit the hope among the Russian people for peace.
Many of the things that catch their eye remain constant to now. One interesting change is the perspective of the Russian people about the direction of their country. In Steinbeck's recollection, the people recognize that they are sacrificing for the good of their country. In 1948, the Russians expect that they will eventually gain from their hard work. Now they seem to have less faith.
This book is a great chance to learn about the personality of the world famous Robert Capa. During his travels with the Hungarian photojournalist, Steinbeck gets pretty pesky about Capa's personal habits. It seems that Capa likes long baths, other people's books, and morning silence. Steinbeck and Capa share rooms during their trip. I really enjoyed the secondary theme that develops on Capa's behavior.
Everyone should read this book, not just people who want to know about Russia.

Great book, but buy in hardback - photo quality in the 1999 edition is poor
By Gary Johnson
This is a great book, but you should buy a hardback edition instead of the paperback. I am a frequent visitor to Russia and I enjoyed the oportunity to compare and contrast Russia today with postwar Russia under Stalin. Unfortunately, Robert Capa's photos in the 1999 paperback are small and muddy. I could not even recognize places that I have visited many times. This book was a collaborative effort, but the 1999 printing seriously short changes Capa's contribution.

I don't know if the images are better in the 2001 paperback or the Kindle version, but after reading the 1999 edition I got a copy of the 1948 hardback via Amazon. I recommend that you do the same if you want to fully enjoy this excellent work.

Post-war Russia through very talented eyes
By Michael Casey
This wonderfully written book takes you through post-war Soviet Union, to farms and cities devastated by war but struggling to return to normalcy. Robert Capa not only adds wonderful photos but his role in this story is both funny and illuminating for any Capa fans. Written in the late 1940s, the story provides us with a very human side of the Russian people. The openness and friendliness of everyone they meet contrasts with the paranoia and hatred so present in the US at that time.
I read this as both a photographer and one who was recently in Russia and the insight provided was very enjoyable and educating. Capa's mannerisms and method of photography allowed his subjects to open up and feel comfortable in his lens -- not an easy thing since so many of the people had lost family and suffered terribly. Steinbeck's writing is honest, funny and his skills as a non-partisan reporter really shine in this work.

City Stages: Theatre and Urban Space in a Global City (Cultural Spaces), by Michael McKinnie

In every major city, there exists a complex exchange between urban space and the institution of the theatre. City Stages is an interdisciplinary and materialist analysis of this relationship as it has existed in Toronto since 1967. Locating theatre companies - their sites and practices - in Toronto's urban environment, Michael McKinnie focuses on the ways in which the theatre has adapted to changes in civic ideology, environment, and economy.

Over the past four decades, theatre in Toronto has been increasingly implicated in the civic self-fashioning of the city and preoccupied with the consequences of the changing urban political economy. City Stages investigates a number of key questions that relate to this pattern. How has theatre been used to justify certain forms of urban development in Toronto? How have local real estate markets influenced the ways in which theatre companies acquire and use performance space? How does the analysis of theatre as an urban phenomenon complicate Canadian theatre historiography?

McKinnie uses the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts and the Toronto Centre for the Performing Arts as case studies and considers theatrical companies such as Theatre Passe Muraille, Toronto Workshop Productions, Buddies in Bad Times, and Necessary Angel in his analysis. City Stages combines primary archival research with the scholarly literature emerging from both the humanities and social sciences. The result is a comprehensive and empirical examination of the relationship between the theatrical arts and the urban spaces that house them.

Why, despite all the mentoring programs, executive training seminars, working women's networks, and other initiatives, are professional women still not where they want to be? Why are many women stereotyped as less effective than men?

Why are they frequently less visible? Is there really a set of unwritten "rules of the game" that women just don't know about? What can a woman manager do to avoid being stereotyped and to develop and showcase her skills and competencies, thereby gaining parity with men?

In an attempt to answer those questions, Fortune 500 consultants Dr. Donna Brooks and Lynn Brooks undertook a landmark research project involving hundreds of executives and managers, of both sexes, at many of the world's leading companies. Great Info - Not Just for Women
By Andy
A friend of mine (a woman) suggested that I take a look this book. I was skeptical at first because of the title, but I found that many of the strategies detailed in the book were just as applicable for men as for women. I was especially interested in the chapters on developing key leadership skills, building effective networks and communication. The many quotes and insights/experiences from CEOs and other senior executives were helpful to put the topics of the book into perspective - great for comparing notes. I plan to share the book with both my male and female colleagues.

Great addition to Taking the Long Way
By Caitlin
First of all, the cover is adorable. The linked pinkies is a great tie-in to the first book when Elinor tells Natalia to hold her whole hand because if they just hold pinkies they could be separated. Natalia brings that into her renewed relationship with Bridget and MaYaD is an entire struggle of them desperately holding on. They become each other's biggest anchor as life starts to take its toll: marriage isn't easy and having kids makes them grow apart. It's written from Bridget's point of view (unlike TtLW which was 3rd person but with a focus on Natalia's outlook) and gives you some further insight, but leaves you completely in the dark on what's going on with Natalia. Bridget is quirky and funny in her own mind and you get to see her constant love for her family despite how hard things get at times. They learn and grow together in such a realistic manner; you're constantly exposed to uncomfortable bumps in their relationship that are typical for people that have been together for so long (their sex life, parenting decisions, trust issues) but they renew your faith that if you love someone enough, you'll do anything to keep them at your side. Bridget and Natalia are a love story for the ages.

Every bit as beautiful as its predecessor
By Sarah
After reading Taking The Long Way, I didn't think the author's could capture me as well every again, but Me and You and Daisies has proved me wrong. Following the couple's journey into motherhood, this beautiful, heartbreaking story will pull at your heart strings in every way possible and leave you feeling as though you have lived in their world for years.

Once again Lily R. Mason handles a range of issues with thought and respect, giving you the feeling you really have drawn something from the experience. Also, with the introduction of the couple's wonderful children, the readers are treated to several moments that will make you feel as if you've been wrapped up in cotton wool and thrown into a pile of kittens.

A wonderful read, and an absolute must for anyone who has read Taking The Long Way.

excellent!!!!! This book isn't exclusively for lesbians. It's for anyone who believes in a good, solid, believable, realisitic love story. Categorizing it as such is an insult to the author, and to the journey of Bridget and Natalia. Brava!

Removing mechanical tension interfering with nervous system function
By Dr. Scott Cuthbert
The Australian physiotherapist clinical-researcher David Butler's earlier work in assessing and treating mechanical restrictions of the nervous system, as described in his best-selling book Mobilisation of the Nervous System, has had an enormous influence on manual therapy, world-wide(Butler, 1991). His latest book expands on the developing scientific support for neural mobilization, discussing how manual treatments effect the CNS at the synaptic and molecular level and to evaluate how neurological processing is effected by psychological and physical inputs. What Butler achieves here is a depiction of the CNS in the widest context of neurobiology and its associated research. The integrative model of health care (involving the structural, chemical and emotional triad) is supported with exhaustive but elegantly presented scientific research. The depth of Butler's insights into what manual therapists are doing with and achieving for their clients is astonishing, deserving of detailed study. Why manual therapy works...the bio-psycho-social framework of the answer to that question is richly provided here.

-- Dr. Scott Cuthbert, author of Applied Kinesiology Essentials: The Missing Link in Health Care (2013), and Applied Kinesiology: Clinical Techniques for Lower Body Dysfunctions (2013).

His books are so knowledgable and informative, but easy to understand and follow...which isn't the case with most neuro books. GREAT book!

German Autumn, by Stig Dagerman

In late 1946, Stig Dagerman was assigned by the Swedish newspaper Expressen to report on life in Germany immediately after the fall of the Third Reich. First published in Sweden in 1947, German Autumn, a collection of the articles written for that assignment, was unlike any other reporting at the time. While most Allied and foreign journalists spun their writing on the widely held belief that the German people deserved their fate, Dagerman disagreed and reported on the humanness of the men and women ruined by the war—their guilt and suffering. Dagerman was already a prominent writer in Sweden, but the publication and broad reception of German Autumn throughout Europe established him as a compassionate journalist and led to the long-standing international influence of the book.

Presented here in its first American edition with a compelling new foreword by Mark Kurlansky, Dagerman’s essays on the tragic aftermath of war, suffering, and guilt are as hauntingly relevant today amid current global conflict as they were sixty years ago.

Review
"Dagerman wrote with beautiful objectivity. Instead of emotive phrases, he uses a choice of facts, like bricks, to construct an emotion."—Graham Greene

"German Autumn is one of the best collections ever written about the aftermath of war. It is on par with John Reed’s classic articles from the Soviet Union as well as with Edgar Snow’s articles about the great political revolution in China. Stig Dagerman depicts the tragic realities of post–World War II Germany with astonishing clarity and artistic skillfulness. He provides the reader with a profound insight, which ultimately is the story of every war. To anyone interested in understanding what great journalism means, German Autumn is indispensable. It should be compulsory reading for all young people who might consider becoming a journalist, and it is as alive as it was when first published in 1947. Read it."—Henning Mankell

"German Autumn is a very important book and it is a very good thing that an English language version is becoming available for Americans. We need this book. "—Mark Kurlansky, from the Foreword

"There are some writers (Kafka and Lorca immediately spring to mind) who come to enjoy the status of saint; their lives and deaths constitute statements about existence and its proper priorities, and the words left behind are continually transfigured by our knowledge of them, indeed acquire on this account a kind of talismanic power. A saint of this type, particularly for his compatriots, is the Swedish writer Stig Dagerman." —Paul Binding, Times Literary Supplement

A Courageous Statement, A Disappointing Read
By A Customer
This book contains a collection of short reflections on the various sufferings of German citizens at the end of World War II (they originally appeared as newspaper articles in the author's native Sweden). Dagerman's basic argument throughout this collection is that German citizens who survived the war should not be treated as "tokens of national guilt" but rather as suffering, fallible human beings who are starving and dying under the Allied occupation. While traveling through the devastated landscape of early post-war Germany, Dagerman discovered that (at least in 1946-7) the Allies had done little to alleviate the tremendous suffering of the German survivors. He felt that punishing the vanquished at that point served no purpose and that doing so only risked pushing the survivors to acts of degradation and criminality. This in turn would do nothing to foster democracy. While I agree with Dagerman's assessment of the situation (in what is sure to be an unpopular opinion for many even today), his collection of short articles whether describing a family living in a flooded basement, train passengers being deported from one part of Germany to another, or an old woman foraging to feed her family, remain oddly unengaging and hollow. Perhaps this is because, as Dagerman himself admitted, he was a journalist who could leave this ruined landscape any time he wished. This is the sort of thing that Heinrich Boll is able to describe much more pungently and in greater depth throughout his writings, but Dagerman's attempt to describe the moral ambiguity of the situation is nonetheless appreciated.
W.G. Sebald mentions this book once or twice in his _On the Natural History of Destruction_. Though I'm not sure he had the opportunity to ***, it is still very edifying and strangely enough seems to complement _German Autumn_ rather nicely.

Good Commentary on German suffering
By S.J.Tagliareni
Always hard in light of the bestial treatment by the Germans of millions to realize that ordinary citizens paid a heavy price for the Nazi dream. The stories contained here bring out individual suffering of those that survived.
