In Laches, Charmides, and Lysis, Socrates and others discuss separate ethical conceptions. Protagoras, Ion, and Meno discuss whether righteousness can be taught. In Gorgias, Socrates is estranged from his city's thought, and his fate is impending. The Apology (not a dialogue), Crito, Euthyphro, and the unforgettable Phaedo relate the trial and death of Socrates and propound the immortality of the soul. In the famous Symposium and Phaedrus, written when Socrates was still alive, we find the origin and meaning of love. Cratylus discusses the nature of language. The great masterpiece in ten books, the Republic, concerns righteousness (and involves education, equality of the sexes, the structure of society, and abolition of slavery). Of the six so-called dialectical dialogues Euthydemus deals with philosophy; metaphysical Parmenides is about general concepts and absolute being; Theaetetus reasons about the theory of knowledge. Of its sequels, Sophist deals with not-being; Politicus with good and bad statesmanship and governments; Philebus with what is good. The Timaeus seeks the origin of the visible universe out of abstract geometrical elements. The unfinished Critias treats of lost Atlantis. Unfinished also is Plato's last work of the twelve books of Laws (Socrates is absent from it), a critical discussion of principles of law which Plato thought the Greeks might accept.

Useful for the specialist and the student

Like most volumes in the Loeb series, the emphasis is not on word-for-word precision in the translation, but on acheiving greater readability in broader terms. Since the original text in ancient Greek is provided on the facing page, the editors assume that anyone with a little knowledge of Greek can supplement the looseness of the translation by referring to the original. And in general, the compromises made in this way are good ones throughout the series. Bury's translation is one of the better ones in the series, achieving readability without sacrificing fidelity. There are also some fine notes to help with some of the more obscure mathematical arguments. It is also very useful to have the Timaeus and the Critias presented together. The inclusion of the Epistles along with the Cleitophon and Menexenus may seem a little miscellaneous, but these are fine translations of interesting texts.

One of the Greatest Gems of Human Wisdom

This should be essential reading as it is one of the greatest works of human history. Subjects include ethics and righteousness, but my favorite read is found in Critias with Solon's description of Atlantis (possibly describing the region between the southern tip of UK and the French coast, a shallow area now covered in deep mud after the deluge swept across the Atlantic from the melt of the last ice age and the bursting of Hudson Bay?).

There is a lot of Plato packed into this volume. Perhaps the most important and overlooked section is found in Timaeus, where Plato describes nothing short of The Creation of The Universe. Here we find the first introduction to Atlantis, but more important, we find a fascinating dialog on mathematics by Timaeus who was a student of the Pythagorean school. Naturally, sections from this vol are conveniently missing, just like many of the other great works from the classical period that survived the Dark Ages.

One has to wonder just how common the mathematical knowledge was back in the day, as described by Plato? Like Pythagorean theorem, it most likely came from Egypt where Plato is known to have spent some time. In the Timaeus we find nothing less than the mathematical construct of the Universe, from nothingness to what we are today; from "chaos to cosmos". This is high sacred geometry at its finest, and after deep meditation we could reasonably wonder if Plato understood molecular construct 2,400 years ago?

I generally have a bias to preferring the Loeb editions, though while not essential, for anyone working with the Platonic mathematics I think it is helpful to have a copy of the Penguin edition as it offers some better diagrams that I found helpful on the start of this journey. If you are buying the book to gain greater awareness of the mathematics (the only reason this should be studied imho), I suggest acquiring the works of Proclus, but unless you can read modern Greek and get the full translation, be prepared for the garbage academia versions currently available in English with their poor commentary and ridiculous prices.

A Must Read for the Little Ones!

My sons are in love with the wonderful dog who delightfully teaches them the importance of being kind, curious and helpful. Just the other day my two year old jumped off the diving board and told me, "mommy I'm brave!", just as the little dog taught him to be. The illustrations are comical and inspiring, while evoking such vital life lessons for children and parents alike. Sheehan's adult version, "Be Happy", is also a must read. It has helped me endure the hard times and seize the triumphs. Sheehan is a treasure.

great book for kids and adults alike!

The format of this book is appropriate is perfect for my three year old nephew who begged me to read it to him several times before going to bed. The large print, colorful pictures and hardboard pages were easy for him to manipulate. Its just a feel good, happy book that help address common situations that people find themselves in. I would give this as a gift for an adult and also buy this book for a child.

About the Author
Wally Rudolph, born in Canada to Jamaican parents, had a fifteen-year affair with illicit drugs that had him drop out of college and took him back and forth across the American Midwest. His fiction can be found in the literary journals Milk Money, Lines+Stars, Palooka, Slush Pile, The Brooklyner, and the anthology, Literary:Pasadena. A graduate of The Second City Conservatory in Chicago, he now resides with his family in Los Angeles. As an actor, he has appeared in numerous films and TV shows including Street Kings, Bang Bang, and Sons of Anarchy. Rudolph is also the author of Four Corners.

A mighty book about the power of hate, love, vengeance and family.

A mighty book set on the streets of a violent Chicago that for all it’s darkness leaves you believing in redemption (hopefully) as it explores the power of hate, love, vengeance and family ties.

We have a tattoo artist who does more free work covering up prison tattoos than commissions; a cop who lived by the "Chicago problems, Chicago solutions" motto dealing with grief and retirement; sisters, each struggling in their own way, trying to find a place in the world that’s less difficult; a priest running a shelter for those seeking a new life and redemption— all destined to collide.

This was one of those dark, violent, seedy books that no matter how much I might fear what happened next I couldn’t stop turning the page.

Great story + incredible characters = New favorite writer

I finished Rudolph's Four Corners over the holidays and was excited to dig into this. To be honest, I didn't know what to expect as the book started, and I worried that it wasn't for me because it started from the perspective of an older cop, but then the story introduced these two sisters and...All I can say is that if you've ever had a sister (or even a brother) and had contentious relationship with them, this book will hit close to home. The way this book talks about family and grieving is the most realistic thing I've ever read. I found myself crying multiple times. But the story -- THE STORY IS CRAZY GOOD! I don't want to give anything away, but as soon as you think, you know what's going on...you don't :0

Mighty Mighty was one of my favorite books of 2015. It has it all: relevance, romance, family, crime and redemption. Wally Rudolph has a unique and powerful voice, I love the way he develops characters while keeping you on the edge of your seat. Never a dull moment in Mighty Mighty.

I'm a lover of historical fiction and it's an immense joy to be able to write it. And in case you were wondering about the dedication, yes. I did lie to a barista about what I was writing in an floundering attempt to flirt with him. Why was it floundering? Because I was thinking about a particular sexy scene in the book that I wanted to add, and when one is deep in thought one does not anticipate flirting with sexy baristas. And are thus surprised when he continues to chat with you. And don't know what to say when he asks if he can read it...*gulp*So you lie. And try not to blush when he hands you your iced tea.

I fell for the highlander.

Eliza was able to transport me and the heroine back to Scotland in the 1700s. I'm obsessed with the series. Roderick was so romantic and impossibly suave. The sex was as hot as the build up. And the twist at the end??? I'm hooked. You will be too.

This book started out strong, but once Aileen traveled back in time, it started to wear me out trying to read through it. I understand the book is 1 of 3, it leaves on a precipitous cliffhanger, which is fine. I expect these things when reading series. But it feels like the author didn't put much effort into the last 30 pages or so of the book (and it's a 59 page book). Nothing was attention grabbing enough to interest me in purchasing the second book of the series.

Unwilling to accept the bleak, almost apocalyptic worldview of many of her progressive counterparts, Solnit celebrates the hope and optimism that recent episodes reveal. She points to the resurrection of indigenous causes represented by Zapatismo, the WTO protests in Seattle and Cancun and the worldwide protests against the U.S.-led war in Iraq, and other smaller, more marginal protests. Solnit argues persuasively that engaged, thoughtful dissent is far healthier today than many believe. Activists, who operate by nature on the fringes of hierarchies of economy and power, often fail to recognize the power of activity that seems inconsequential. Her goal, in essence, is “to throw out the crippling assumptions with which many activists proceed.” While Solnit’s goal is admirable and her prose graceful, this book suffers from the same confusion and disorganization she recognizes as necessarily inherent to activism itself. Her examples are diverse yet disjointed; she is overly reliant on the words of others; and she often wanders into spiritual mumbo-jumbo and platitudes. While these tendencies hamper the clarity of her argument, fans of Solnit and progressives may find much to admire here.”

Rebecca Solnit is the best thing going today.

If you have any interest in writing, in the personal essay, in beautiful sentences, in thoughtful observations -- then you can't avoid Rebecca Solnit.
She has created a genre all of her own, something very few writers can even dream of doing. It just isn't possible to write better than she does.
She has made me fall in love with her mind. Her books reach deep into my world, turn things around, and make me see things differently. They make me different. Again, it's the very highest work that writing can ever do. I will always read anything she writes. The "subject" doesn't matter.
She shows, with an almost magical eloquence that also remains natural and easy-flowing (organic), what writing is for, and just how much it can actually do. And she just gets better. She makes the world a better place.

Excellent - gives an uncommon perspective on activism as a journey rather than as an attempt to gain utopia. See activism as a failure when we don't reach all of our goals, keeps us from celebrating our successes, even when they are less than our goals, and this leaves us uninspired to continue what has been good work.

While the bulk of this slender book addresses an era several years ago, the act of reading and remembering how past woes have been overcome is in itself an act of hope. Highly recommend to anyone who cares about making change in their community.

good book; poor ebook

the book itself is a fantastic read. however, this ebook was clearly made with OCR software and is challenging to read because of the constant barage of formating errors and misreads by the software. only a dollar though so a good deal.
