Wittmann explains, among other things, how we choose between savoring the moment and deferring gratification; why impulsive people are bored easily, and why their boredom is often a matter of time; whether each person possesses a personal speed, a particular brain rhythm distinguishing quick people from slow people; and why the feeling of duration can serve as an "error signal," letting us know when it is taking too long for dinner to be ready or for the bus to come. He considers the practice of mindfulness, and whether it can reduce the speed of life and help us gain more time, and he describes how, as we grow older, subjective time accelerates as routine increases; a fulfilled and varied life is a long life. Evidence shows that bodily processes -- especially the heartbeat -- underlie our feeling of time and act as an internal clock for our sense of time. And Wittmann points to recent research that connects time to consciousness; ongoing studies of time consciousness, he tells us, will help us to understand the conscious self.

Highly recommended.

An absorbing read on a topic that few write about with the kind of research background that Wittmann has. I've been able to take his descriptions of felt time and apply them in the classroom when explaining some of the dynamics of substance use and the challenges of recovery from misuse. Time perception lies at the heart of many disorders of thinking and behaving and a focus on this one dimension of human perception offers a unique and fresh way to enter into how different consciousnesses take in the world.

Delightfully, the book is short and does not suffer from what seems the norm these days - endless repetitions of contents that could be handled with economy. This is a well written and well supported set of ideas about how our perception of time affects our views of self and situations. Highly recommended.

Only sort of about time perception.

Given the title I was expecting a book with a more empirical and focuses review of the time perception literature than what this book delivers. Much of it was sort of interesting but much of it also was only tangentially related to actual time perception. This is especially true of the first chapter which presents a wandering discussion of how people value costs and benefits in the future as opposed to the present. The best part of the book is that on why time appears to have gone by faster as we get older. The idea here is that during adolescence we encounter in our lives many events and experiences that are new to us and so leave a lasting impression in memory when we look back years later. In contrast, after adolescence our lives become quite predictable and pretty much the same year after year. Thus those post-adolescence years have fewer events that stand out in memory and when we remember back to those years the fewer specific events that come to mind make those years appear to have passed rapidly. It's a version of the filled time illusion - which the author somehow never mentions.
The author has a philosophical bent so there is the expected amount of hand waving and obscurantism. For example, on page 102 where Jana is quoted: "For something can only be present if there is someone for whom it is present." This reminds me of Chomsky's famous sentence "Colorless green ideas sleep furiously." I understand the meaning of each word in these two sentences but the sentences themselves are devoid of meaning.
The lack of an index speaks of a penny-pinching publisher.

Pop Surrealism: What Is It?
Art movements are created in hindsight—we reflect on what happened and that’s how we are able to label and identify them. For those artists like myself, Mark Ryden, Audrey Kawasaki, James Jean, Camille Rose Garcia, and others, working within the movement, creating art before there was even a label, we didn’t pattern our art after something that we saw, but rather created it on the precipice of defining the style, giving the movement its foundation. My fellow Pop Surrealists and I actively created the art without being consciously aware of what we had to do in order to be Pop Surrealists. 
People ask me whether I like being labeled as a Pop Surrealist, whether I like being defined in such a way. I don’t mind it at all, because I don’t limit myself to it. I create art for myself; whether or not it fits within the confines of the definition of Pop Surrealism is up for interpretation. However, I believe that artists within the movement dictate what Pop Surrealism is, simply by breaking boundaries and continuously creating new and diverse art.

Insightful book on painting and Camilla's process

[[VIDEOID:8576c2dfd0ad7d7534b0d74e15ac5d9f]]Pop Painting is a really insightful guide that goes behind the scenes to show you the painting process of Camilla d'Errico, one of the better known artists in the world of Pop Surrealism art. I've seen her artwork online quite often, and in other artbooks.

I've always thought that Pop Surrealism is similar to Lowbrow but Camilla actually defines it a bit differently, saying that Pop Surrealism "has brighter, more whimsical, and more playful nature". This is actually an art movement that baffles me. But I do appreciate the artists who paint in this style because it adds variety to art in general, and that's a good thing.

There is a lot of information in this 238-page paperback. First half of the book is Camilla talking about her inspiration and workflow, things like where she finds inspiration, thinking as a painter, the materials that she uses, and also subject matter. There are also lots of techniques being discussed.

Second half of the book are step-by-step examples from her paintings. There are 19 paintings featured where she demonstrates and explains her process and techniques. Each painting actually focuses on a specific area, for example, a painting could be a portrait, but that example might talk specifically about drawing the hair perhaps, and in another paintings, it could be about eyes, or lips or other things. The painting demonstrations are split into subject matter namely: humans, animals, melting effects and twisting reality.

I'll recommend this to fans of Camilla d'Errico and Pop Surrealism. Camilla is very generous with sharing her knowledge to benefit other others. Highly recommended.

Thank you Camilla! It is so rare to have an artist (especially a favorite) be so open about their process. Not only does this book showcase her beautiful work, it gives step by step instructions on her technique and suggestions on how to make the work your own. I am a self-taught artist so I have read TONS of books on painting/drawing and I absolutely love this book. The book is well written, and I knew it was a great choice when I opened it and saw paintings by some of my other favorite artists. Although my style is much different than Camilla's, I have learned many things that I haven't seen in other "how-to" books. This is the first review I've ever written, and I'm thrilled with this purchase!

Fun and informative

The quality of this book is great, and the artwork inside is beautiful and reproduced very well. In the first section of the book (the first ten chapters or so), Camilla d'Errico talks about what pop surrealism is, what inspires her, how she handles creative blocks, finding a style, composition, complacency, colors and emotions, the tools she uses, and one of her favorite techniques, blending. None of it is super in depth but she does have some good tips I'd never heard before and it's always interesting to hear an artist talk about their work.

The second part of the book is the step-by-step tutorials. I did not try these (I wanted to get the Holbein Duo paints she talks about) but I did take a look at them. I was pleasantly surprised to see that they are more thorough than other step-by-step tutorials in art books I have. Of course, they do assume you already have some level of drawing skill. This fact should be understood when looking into almost any painting "how to" book--after all, many schools won't let you take even an intro painting until you've taken at least a semester and sometimes a year of drawing first. Nonetheless I feel like this bears pointing out since sometimes reviews on art technique books reveal that the reviewer thought the book would somehow magically make them great artists: if you don't have some drawing skill, you will still able to put her techniques (shadowing, definition, texture, color mixing) into practice, but if you have never drawn anything or do not have any aptitude for it, your pieces probably will not look polished like d'Errico's work (I'm sure they would have a charm all their own though--in fact sometimes I prefer art by "non-artists"). Also, there's no substitute for practice. That said, the tutorials are informative, helpful, and thorough (she tells you what kind of brush she's using, how she's shading, where she's adding colors to complement different elements, etc.--things that make a painting look great that you might not think about automatically).

All in all I think this is a really fun book to look through and I am excited to try out some of her tutorials. I spend a lot of times looking at art books and I think this one is worthwhile.

Read It and Read It Again

After spending the last few years writing sexy romances as Jennifer Fulton, Fulton aka Rose Beecham has triumphantly returned to penning mysteries. With the award-winning Grave Silence, she mixes facts, surrounding the activities of the Fundamentalist Church of the Latter Day Saints (FLDS), with a riveting murder mystery and crafts a gripping story.

When we first meet Sheriff's Detective Jude Devine, a former FBI agent who has been transferred to a small Colorado town in the Four Corners area, she is unraveling the grisly murder of a young woman left decomposing in a desert wash. The clues to solving this crime take Devine and the reader on an unbelievable journey beyond anything we could have imagined. FLDS is a splinter group not recognized by the Mormon Church that among other things illegally practices polygamy. Beecham deftly weaves a second plot about life on an FLDS ranch into this story. We learn how autocracy and abuse rule the mostly underage girls married to the "master" of the cult, and how silence is used as a survival tool to avoid being punished for disobeying. As the book evolves, these two plots collide forcefully, taking the reader on a compelling adventure with Devine emerging as the silent hero.

After reading this book over eight months ago, this reviewer was haunted by the "facts" of Grave Silence. I wanted to know where the fiction ended, and the truth began. After hearing a talk by Beecham on how she compiled her research and gathered first-hand information about FLDS, I received my answers and was shocked. This is not a book where an author spews her views on religion disguised as a novel. FLDS is a cult that does not adhere to any tenets of any religion. Beecham has done a tremendous amount of in depth research to incorporate these facts into a fictional murder mystery, and the results are an amazing and fascinating book. The writing is tight and fluid. The path to the murder clues grows as the plot moves forward. Beecham strings her readers along cleverly, not releasing us until the final explosive ending.

After hearing Beecham speak about Grave Silence, I reread the book. If she had written a non-fiction account of this cult, I would not have believed the magnitude and far-reaching effects FLDS has on its victims, the young girls who are forced into this way of life by other adult family members. This fictional story, termed a "message mystery" by the author, cannot be ignored. It captures the reader and obliges us to look beyond our world. Beecham's telling helps us swallow the hard reality and reflect upon the importance of unmasking these groups. After reading Grave Silence, I suggest you take another glance. The implications of this novel are significant and cannot be overlooked.

(Beecham won a 2006 GCLS award in the mystery/thriller/adventure category for Grave Silence. In September 2006 Sleep of Reason, the second Jude Devine mystery, will be released.)

Rare Find in Lesbian Mysteries

It's rare to find a lesbian mystery that is better written and more compelling than most straight ones. Grave Silence exceeded every expectation I had. It's brilliantly researched, riveting to read, introduces a great new lesbian detective, and pulled me into a world so disturbing, I'm still thinking about it.

Rose Beecham combines a terrific crime drama with a blistering expose of a Mormon cult called the FLDS. I had never heard of these people until I read this book, so for educational reasons alone, Grave Silence is more important than most novels. It's also moving, memorable, powerful, funny, sexy, and the writing truly knocked my socks off.

Not only is Jude Devine a fascinating and hot hero, but there are some outstanding secondary characters - sensitive Deputy Tulley, the repulsive Naoma, and Adeline, the runaway "bride", just to name a few.

Beecham also runs several great sub-plots through the story. I can't wait for the next book to see what happens with Dr. Mercy Westmoreland, Chastity (please bring her back), Jude's missing brother, and the creepy white supremacists.

I normally don't get around to reviewing books, but I had to spread the word about this one. Grave Silence is exceptional. My hat's off to its author.

A welcome return by the author

It's good to see Rose Beecham back on the shelves. This is far better than her previous detective series (Amanda Valentine), and that's saying a lot.

This book is one of the rare books that I immediately begin re-reading as soon as I reach the end; it's that good.

Others have described the plot; I'll just add that not only do you learn more about a topic that you really wish weren't true (the plygs) but you have a helluva read.

All I can say to the author is "More!".

"What A Surprise"

Michael Reinhard has accomplished more in 200 pages than several other courses in this field. His book has laid out a roadmap of the lender's requirements for successful commercial loan underwriting. In particular, chapter 2 gives commercial real estate investors a real appreciation of the details required to build a successful loan package. Michael's book is very appealing to beginners in the commercial loan origination business or real estate investors who want to gain a better understanding of the commercial loan process. I strongly recommend this book as a primer for anyone involved in the commercial real estate industry.

The Essential Handbook for Every New Commercial Loan Agent

Thank you, Michael Reinhard, for writing this much-needed book which really delivers on its promises! As a former underwriter, I can appreciate the enormous value this book brings to the industry because I know first-hand the importance of a well-prepared submission package and the consequences of a poorly prepared one. The book is clear, concise and to-the-point. These pages don't contain any fluff. Everything contained is there for a reason and very well organized so you can find it easily when you need to reference back to it later. And if you want to do well, you will want to reference back over and over again as you prepare your submissions. Everything you need to improve your odds and submit a complete and thorough package is explained, including clear examples to illustrate. The reasoning behind each concept is well explained so the paperwork and the ratios and underwriting decisions all make sense if you are new. There is as much information in this book as I received in a 6-month intensive commercial training program at the bank I used to work for. I think this book should be considered The Essential Handbook for every beginning commercial loan agent, and I now recommend it to everyone who joins my team. It's the best training manual I have seen, and it should be kept nearby where it's ready to be grabbed frequently. This isn't a book you'll want to loan to a friend. This is the kind you tell them to get their own copy and expect it to be very dog-eared.

Great book for beginners. Would make a good text book for the classroom. Basic important information. No commercial lending book can tell you all you need to know but this one hits on all the important points needed to close a deal.

About the Author
Mary Ann Cunningham teaches geography and geographic information systems (GIS), and environmental studies at Vassar College, Poughkeepsie, NY. Her research involves using GIS to assess landscape-level problems in conservation and biodiversity. In particular, she is interested in understanding the nature of fragmentation in grassland environments and the effects of fragmentation on the make-up of bird communities. The agricultural landscapes where she has been working represent a complex and fascinating interaction of issues concerning working landscapes, resource use, remnant wildlife habitat, and landscape aesthetics. It is at the intersection of these issues that she likes to try and understand the geography of physical environments. Mary Ann earned a PhD in Geography at the University of Minnesota, an MA in Geography at the University of Oregon, and a BA in Geology at Carleton College.

William Cunningham is an Emeritus Professor at the University of Minnesota where he taught for 36 years in the Departments of Botany and Genetics and Cell Biology as well as the Conservation Biology Program, the Institute for Social, Economic, and Ecological Sustainability, the Center for Environmental Learning and Leadership, and the McArthur Program in Global Change. He received his Ph.D. in Botany from the University of Texas in 1963 and spent two years at Purdue University as a postdoctoral fellow. At various times, he has been a visiting scholar in Sweden, Norway, Indonesia, and China, as well as several universities and research institutions in the United States.
Dr. Cunningham has devoted himself to education and teaching development at the undergraduate level in biology.  He began his educational career in structural biology but for the last 10-15 years has concentrated on environmental science, teaching courses such as Social Uses of Biology; Garbage, Government, and the Globe; Environmental Ethics; and Conservation History.  Within the past four years, he has received both of the two highest teaching honors that the University of Minnesota bestows  -- The Distinguished Teaching Award and a $15,000 Amoco Alumni Award.  He has served as a Faculty Mentor for younger faculty at the university, sharing the knowledge and teaching skills that he has gained during his distinguished career.

About the Author

Bill Seifert was a project engineer at Tartan Marine Company, materials manager at Tillotson Pearson Inc., and a project manager at Alden Yachts. In 1991, he started his own yacht management company. He does prerace seaworthiness inspections for the Marion - Bermuda Race.

Dan Spurr was the editor of Practical Sailor newsletter for twelve years. A former senior editor for Cruising World, he is the author of Heart of Glass: Fiberglass Boats and the Men Who Made Them, Spurr's Boatbook: Upgrading the Cruising Sailboat, and Yacht Style, among other books.

Tips to improve your life, both off- and near- shore

Ever slap your head and wonder, "Why didn't I think of that?" Well, there's a good chance Bill Seifert has figured it out and the answer is in this book. But don't misunderstand - this book is not just clever, it's practical, and although the title says "offshore" don't be fooled. The advise here is for all of us, from day sailor to coastal cruiser to offshore explorer. These tips will not only make you a better, safer sailor, they will increase your enjoyment. For example, by following Bill's advise on spring lines and docking I have substantially reduced frustration and tension. And don't leave this book at home! There are 10 pages of recipes from one of the world's best offshore gastronomes.

I rarely bother to write reviews, but I have to add my kudos to the others given here. There is a down-to-earth pragmatism in these pages that I haven't found anywhere else. The authors have condensed an extraordinary amount of experience into 200 very succinct tips that cover a broad range of subjects. Many of their suggestions are low tech and can be easily implemented yourself. They have been there, done that and it shows. I am putting this one right next to Dashew, Calder, Sutphen and Leonard to fill in the blanks.

Personal experience with Bill Seifert

Having a copy of this book is the next best thing to actually having Bill aboard. I have had the privilege of knowing and sailing with Bill for over 12 years. While I had sailed all my life, I had never done any offshore work until after I met Bill. His teaching prepared me and my family for the satisfying challenges of offshore sailing. He has sailed with me on 4 Marion-Bermuda races including the 2001 race in which we were first in Class A, and 2nd(by one minute) on elapsed time. He is an excllent teacher and a resourceful boat keeper. He is also an outstanding offshore gourmet cook.(That is another story, maybe even a book.) Many of the tips in this book were generated by his experiences on my Alden 50 cutter, Despedida and on her successor, a new Alden 54 cutter. I would not go offshore without having read this book and having it aboard. With this book, all aspiring to sail offshore, can have Bill aboard.
